WASHINGTON, D.C. - D.C. United selected former University of Memphis men's soccer forward Andy Metcalf in the second round of the 2006 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft on Thursday.
Metcalf is one of two players selected by D.C. in the four-round draft that followed the four-round MLS Super Draft on Friday, Jan. 22. He will report for the beginning of pre-season training in Washington, D.C. on Monday, January 30 in preparation for the 2006 MLS campaign.
"I'm delighted for the opportunity that Andy has with D.C. United," said University of Memphis head coach Richie Grant. "He has been a tremendous goal scorer for us the last four years and will have an excellent shot at making an impact at the next level."
Selected with the seventh pick in the draft's second round (19th overall), the 6-0, 175-pound striker was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team in 2003 and 2005. He led the Tigers and Conference USA in goals during both his junior and his senior campaigns with 12. The Jackson, Tenn., native scored a goal in each of the first four conference games and led C-USA with seven goals in league play. He led the team to its first C-USA regular season and tournament titles in 2004.
Metcalf finished his collegiate career ranked third all-time at Memphis in goals with 39 and tied for third all-time in points with 90. He is second on the C-USA all-time goals list. Metcalf was also a 2004 First Team NSCAA/Adidas South Region Scholar Athlete and made the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll for 2003-05.
Metcalf is the second Memphis player to be drafted by an MLS team this year, joining teammate Dayton O'Brien who was selected by the Columbus Crew in the third round of the Super Draft. Prior to this year no Tiger player had ever been drafted by an MLS team. Metcalf is one of five C-USA players selected in the Supplemental Draft and 10 players selected overall.
