MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Reserve guard Marcus Moody scored 21 points Saturday
night to lead Memphis to an 81-58 victory over Kansas State.
Moody, who quit the team earlier this season but was let back on when he
asked to return a couple of days later, connected on 9-of-15 field goals,
including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. The win snapped a two-game losing streak
for Memphis (5-8).
Kelly Wise had 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Modibo Diarra
added 13 and Shannon Forman scored 11 for the Tigers.
Phineas Atchison led the Wildcats (5-5) with 18, while Matt Siebrandt had
11, including the Wildcats' first 7 points of the second half. Larry Reid
scored 10.
Kansas State was plagued by poor shooting, hitting just 22.6 percent in the
first half. The Wildcats also committed 20 turnovers.
Meanwhile, Memphis shot 62.1 percent in the second period as they put the
game out of reach.
Memphis, which never trailed, led 28-21 at the half, thanks to a 10-0 run
midway through the period.
Moody had two baskets in the stretch as Kansas State went almost seven
minutes without scoring. The Wildcats missed 21 of their first 24 shots and
ended up 7-of-31 from the field for the first half.
The Tigers continued to build their lead after the break as they pounded the
ball inside to Wise. When Wise scored inside with 15:04 left, Memphis had a
40-30 lead and would hold a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Moody scored 12 straight Memphis points in a 3:03 stretch, including a pair
of 3-pointers. His final points in the stretch gave Memphis a 55-36 lead with
11:14 left.
The 23-point lead at the end was Memphis' biggest.
