CARY, N.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men's and Women's Cross Country teams wrapped up their season at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships on Saturday, October 29. The Fighting Hawks took fourth overall while the Lady Hawks finished ninth. Alfred Singoei and Geoffrey Rutto finished in the Top 15 for the men while Janeth Chelangat took fourth overall for the women.

The Fighting Hawks took fourth with their score of 118. Singoei finished third overall as he posted an individual time of 23:45 while Rutto took 11th in 25:38. Singeoi holds two of the top five individual times this season and paced the Hawks to a first place finish at the Norfolk Invite on Oct. 8. The transfer from Iowa State had the best finish for any Hawk in the history of the MEAC Cross Country Championships.

Singoei, Rutto, Clayton James (26:35.4), Samuel Mwangi (28:04) and Jason Daley (31:33) all finished the day with personal records.

The Lady Hawks finished with 213 points, just one point behind eighth-place South Carolina State. Chelangat took fourth overall with her time of 19:00.9. The freshman from Nairobi, Kenya won the Cappy Anderson Invite earlier this season and broke the course record previously held by Loyola's Jackie Trunvellito (19:21) with a time of 19:14.54. Chelangat was the only freshman to make the Top 15.

The MEAC Championship ends the 2005 Cross-Country Season for UMES. The Hawks will begin their indoor track and field season in January.

The Howard University women and the Norfolk State University men captured the 2005 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship titles Saturday afternoon at the SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.

Norfolk State men scored 20 points, an all-time MEAC Championship record, to capture its unprecedented sixth consecutive title. The Lady Bison won their seventh overall title.

Hampton's Krystle Medlin and Norfolk State's David Kemboi were name MEAC Outstanding Performers. Medlin finished first in the women's race with a time of 18:34 and Kemboi finished with a time of 23:30 to win the men's race.

Howard's Michael Merritt was named the Outstanding Coach for the women and Kenneth Giles of Norfolk State was selected the Outstanding Coach for the men.

On the women's side, Norfolk State was second (78), followed by Hampton (104), Florida A&M (106) and Delaware State (122). The third place finish for Hampton, last year's champion, is the first time the Lady Pirates have not finished either first or second since the 2001 season, where they finished fourth.

For the men, second place went to Florida A&M (75), followed by Howard (105), UMES (118) and Coppin State (126).
