NEWARK, Del. - After taking last week off for training regiments the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) cross-country squads were back in action at the Delaware Invitational #2, hosted by the University of Delaware. The rest and training must have paid off as UMES took both the men and women's individual race titles. Merrecia James (Portland, Jamaica/G.C. Foster) and Peter Sang (Kapsabet, Kenya/Kapsabet Boys H.S.) each took the tape in their respective races. James finished with a time of 18:44 in the 5K course while Sang crossed in 25:53 on an 8K course. Both times were their second fastest this season. On the women's side the Hawks took 17th, 21st, 25th, and 28th places to equal 91 points and take third place behind Towson and Delaware who finished one and two with 46 and 54 points respectively. They topped Millersville, Loyola (Md.), Temple, West Chester, George Mason and MEAC foes Howard, Delaware State and Coppin State. Tamica Thomas was in 17th while Betty Chumbe, Celia Whyte and Janeth Chelangat rounded out the scorers for UMES. Thomas ran the course in 19:47 while Chumbe followed with a time of 19:53. Whyte complete the course in 20:08 while Chelangat crossed in 20:18. All five runners were in the top 30 of 124 runners. On the men's Side Sang was dominant with a time of 25:53, 14 seconds better than second place. Amon Kiprotich took sixth place with a time of 26:43. UMES also scored third with 85 points by taking 19th, 31st, and 33rd. Solomon Kirongo took 19th with a time of 27:29 while Clayton James was 31st (27:59) and Nathaniel Taylor was 33rd (28:02). Delaware (41 points) and Temple (80) both finished ahead of UMES with Millersville, West Chester, American, Loyola (Md.) all behind UMES. Howard, Coppin State and Delaware State were 9th-11th. The men's field consisted of 112 runners. UMES also placed Samuel Mwangi in 68th with a time of 29:15 while Jerome Pyuzza was 78th with a time of 29:52. The Hawks take the week off, again to train and prepare, as the following week, October 27th, they travel to Norfolk, Va. to compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships. |
