NORFOLK, VA - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore's men's and women's cross-country teams performed well this past weekend at the Norfolk State University Cross-Country Invitational in Virginia Beach, Va. The men took first place with 26 points as Barnabas Togom placed second overall with a time of 23:11, just 29 seconds behind the top finisher Joseph Lomong, who was not affiliated with any university. Geoffrey Rutto came in fifth place with a time of 24:16, while Damion Drummond placed eighth, Clayton James was ninth, Christopher Havrilla finished 11th, Frederick Keter was 13th, Omar Fikri took 15th, and Julien Cherrington placed 19th. On the women's side Eva Slavikova took home another victory in the 3.1 mile race with a time of 18:38, just two seconds ahead of Jitka Vaculikova from Hampton University. However, Hampton took first place with 32 points, while the Lady Hawks finished second with 41 points. The victory for Slavikova was her fourth victory in five races this season. Individual finishes for the women were Pavla Zavoralova in 4th, Evelynn Mendoza was 11th, Deborah Meadows placed 12th, Kori Barrett 14th, and Rachel Middy rounded out the top 20. Both teams will look to continue their recent success as they travel to Delaware to take part in the University of Delaware Invitational on October 16th. This will be the last race before the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference meet on the 30th in Greensboro, N.C. |
