PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Merrecia James (Port Antonia, Jamaica/G.C. Foster) and Alfred Singeoi (Nairobi, Kenya/Iowa State) finished first in their respective races to pace the Hawk cross country teams to a first place finish at the UMES Dual Meet on October 7. The maroon and gray, originally scheduled to participate in the Norfolk State Invitational at Mount Trashmore (Virginia Beach, Va.), hosted the Duel Meet after UMES and Delaware State were not able to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel due to heavy rain and wind advisories. James ran the course in 18:27.2 to win the women's individual title. Betty Chumbe (Nairobi, Kenya/Egerton) was next for the Lady Hawks, running 18:30.4 to place second while Janeth Chelangat (Nairobi, Kenya/Kipsigis) took third in 18:31.8. Candice Anderson (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) finished ninth in 23:18.8 while Sherita Harriott (Trelawny, Jamaica./G.C. Foster) was 10th in 23:23.1. Singoei ran the 5K men's course in 26:29.6. Solomon Kirongo (Nairobi, Kenya/Kipkabus) was second in 28:01.8, followed by Clayton James (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Kingston), who placed third in 28:20.8. Samuel Mwangi (Nairobi, Kenya/Naro Moru) was eighth in 29:59.1 and Mamadou Diallo (Hyattsville, Md./Parkdale) placed ninth in 30:06.9. The Fighting Hawks took first place in the men's race with 23 points with DSU placing second for the men with 32 points. The Lady Hawks also finished first in the team standings with 25 points while the Lady Hornets took second with 30. UMES will next run at the Delaware Invitational on Saturday, October 14. |
