PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Senior Alfred Singoei won the men's individual title as the host Hawks finished strong at the Cappy Anderson Invitational Saturday morning. Singoei took first in 26:13.14, helping the men's cross country squad to a second place team finish. Janeth Chelangat, meanwhile, led three Lady Hawk runners in the top five places with a second place finish.

Chelangat led the women's cross country squad to a third-place team finish with a time of 18:20.17 while Howard's Jessica Neal won the women's individual title and set a new course record (set last year by Chelangat) by crossing the line in 18:09.17.

Merrecia James took third for the maroon and gray in 18:26.90 while Betty Chumbe earned fifth place with a time of 18:39.12.

On the men's side, Solomon Kirongo placed sixth in 28:06.59 while Clayton James crossed the line in 28:32.71, en route to an eighth place finish.

"It was a great meet," said Head Coach Ernest Barrett. "We saw a lot of really fast times today; the women's race had eight runners beat the previous course record. The weather was perfect, and everything went well."

Seton Hall won the men's race with 39 points while Hampton won the women's title with 60 points.

UMES takes the course again on October 7 at the Norfolk State Invitational.
