PRINCESS ANNE, MD - University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) senior Kimani Kirton (St. Thomas, Jamaica/Kingston) crushed his own school shot put record and advanced to the finals at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after placing seventh in the qualifying round, Thursday at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex. Kirton threw 18.77m (61'7") during Thursday's preliminary round, a mark that placed him fifth in the flight and seventh overall amongst the 26-entrant field. The top 12 move on to the final round, slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. EST on Saturday. Less than two weeks ago, Kirton took fourth at the NCAA East Regional Championship by hitting 18.58m (60'11"). Classmate Ronnie Beard (Frederick, Md./Frederick H.S.) had a good outing in the 400-meter hurdles after placing fifth in his heat and 22nd overall in 52.57.
