CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - UMES' Ronnie Beard notched regional qualifying marks in the 110m hurdles as the Hawks competed at Virginia's Abramson/Onesty Invite on April 15. Beard earned third place honors with his season's best and personal record of 14.08.

Beard took third in the 400m hurdles in 52.80 while Mikel Thomas finished seventh in the same event with his mark of 53.12 seconds. Alfred Singoei grabbed fourth place in the 5000m run in 15:22.41 while William McCollough was the runner up in the 400m dash, taking second place with his finish in 47.93.

McCollough earned a 21.95 mark in the 200m dash while Clayton James competed in the 800m run and finished in 1:53.28.

Jason Daley had the highest finish among collegiate competitors in the long jump, leaping 7.32 meters (24.02 feet) en route to a fourth-place finish. The men's 4x400m relay team beat out competitors from St. Joe's, George Mason and the host Cavaliers to take first-place honors in 3:14.12. The 4x100 squad earned a respectable seventh-place finish in 42.41.

On the women's side, other top-eight finishers for the maroon and gray included Dionne Wright, who took fourth in the shot put with her throw of 13.82 meters (45.34 feet). Petagay O'Connor hit 12.07 meters (39.6 feet) in the triple jump, good for fourth place, while Sherita Harriott also took fourth with her 40.35 meters (132.38 feet) in the javelin.

Harriott grabbed seventh place in both the high jump and the long jump with leaps of 1.7 meters (5.56 feet) and 5.87 meters (19.26 feet), respectively.

The 4x100m squad rounded out the top finishers for the Lady Hawks with their eighth-place finish in 48.53 seconds.

The teams are off for one week, next returning to the track on April 21-22 at the Morgan State Invitational.
