March 18, 2007 CHARLOTTE, N.C. - James Moore won the high jump and Tanisha Wisdom took first in the 400m run to lead the Hawks at the 49er Classic, hosted by UNC Charlotte, on March 16-17. Moore won the high jump with a leap of 2.03 meters (6-08.00 feet). Jamahl Strachan was the runner up in the same event with a jump of 2.00m (6-06.75 feet) while Brandon Eaton had a personal best in the triple jump with his fifth place finish of 14.07m (46-02.00 feet). Eaton went on to take sixth in the long jump (7.04m or 23-01.25 feet). Clayton James posted a sixth place finish in the 800m run in 1:55.66 while Ronnie Beard rounded out the top 10 finishes for the Hawks, finishing ninth in the preliminary round of the 110m hurdles in 14.72. In the women's race, Wisdom placed first in the 400m run with a time of 55.37. Freshman Merrecia James set a new personal record with her fourth place finish in the 800m run in 2: 15.90. Dionne Wright was the runner up in the shot put with a throw of 13.95m (45-09.25 feet) and later took 10th in the discus (37.91 meters or 124-04 feet). Junior Sherita Harriott had a good outing in the javelin after taking sixth with a throw of 36.00m (118-01 feet) while the women's 4x100m relay team took home a bronze medal when they crossed the line in 47.44 seconds. UMES returns to action this weekend at UNC Wilmington's Cape Fear Classic on March 22-24. |
