UMES TRACK & FIELD EXPLODES IN BOSTON WITH OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES

Boston, MA - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men and women's track teams were outstanding this past weekend in the St. Valentine's Invitational held in Boston, MA. In a field of over 30 teams, the Hawks strutted their stuff, taking several top finishes.

Eva Slavikova set another MEAC record and UMES record in the mile run, breaking the previous she set earlier this season. She took ninth place but ran a time of 4:57.22. "She is peaking in time for MEACs," said Head Coach Ernest Barrett. "She is running really well, the entire team is," added Barrett.

Kelly Ann Lue was outstanding in the 55-meter dash, taking third overall in the preliminary round and then fifth place in the finals with a time of 7.32. Chantelle Ringgold wasn't far behind in the preliminary round, taking seventh place with a 7.38 time. Eboni Reavis was tenth (7.45), Candace Frederick 12th (7.48) and Nicole McKenzie 20th (7.58)

In the 200 meter dash Reavis took home fifth place (25.14), Frederick was eighth (25.37), and close behind was Shakira Robinson in ninth (25.38). Ringold took tenth (25.45), Nashira Rawls 11th (25.64), and McKenzie was 22nd (26.47).

The 400-meter dash was no exception for great finishes as Alyssa Walker crossed the line in seventh place (56.94) and Kori Barrett 15th (58.85). Debbie Meadows ran twice the distance in the 800-meter run, taking home 14th place with a time of 2:15.57.

In the 55-meter hurdle preliminaries Robinson was tenth, just missing the cut with a time of 8.70. Lue had another strong performance in the long jump taking fourth place (5.64 meters) and was trailed by Ringgold in 12th (5.17 meters). Tanesha Davis was 12th in the shot put (11.79 meters) while the women's 4 x 400 meter relay team took home fourth overall.

On the men's side the Hawks got another strong performance from freshman Ronnie Beard who took home 11th in the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles and 14th in the 200-meter dash (22.08). The big finisher was Damion Drummond who came home third in the 800 meter run (1:51.06) while Duran Smith took home fourth in the long jump (6.80 meters). Newcomer Kimani Kirton was seventh in the shot put (15.23 meters). Markeith Eldridge-Scott took home 11th in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash (6.59), and Gareth Burrowes was 29th in the 400-meter dash (49.80).

"It was a great track to run on," said Barrett. "Our guys and girls did well and are in a good position for an outstanding MEAC Championships."
