Herd Spikers Drop East Carolina 3-0 on Senior Night

HUNTINGTON - Marshall Thundering Herd volleyball team sent its lone senior Christin Bimberg out with a 3-0 (30-18, 33-31, 30-26) victory over East Carolina on Saturday in front of the Cam Henderson Center's largest crowd of the season. The Herd (20-10, 12-4 C-USA) played inspired volleyball opening the match with 924 in attendance and commanded a 30-18 game one win. The Herd would trail in parts of games two and three but were able to come away with the sweep of the Pirates (19-11, 10-6 C-USA) with an offensive barrage from Kelly-Anne Billingy. With the win the Herd secured its fifth straight season with 20 or more wins. Billingy blasted 30 kills setting a Marshall record for the most kills in three games. Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said East Carolina could not stop her tonight. "If you don't have an answer for her, we are going to keep going to her," he said. "I think she only stopped herself." Billingy only committed six hitting errors and finished with a .462 attack percentage. Bimberg, who posted a 51 assists, said Billingy's play was remarkable. "It's not hard to get a lot of assists when you have good hitters, Kelly just did an awesome job tonight," she said. "Everybody played well but she was just awesome." Bimberg scored her eighth double-double of the season with 10 digs to go with her assist count. Leading the team with her 12th double-double was Stephanie Cahill with 11 kills and 11 digs. Uche Ndubisi also scored double digit kills with 12 and four blocks.
The Herd will await the outcome of other conference matches on Sunday to see who will be matched up in next week's Conference USA Tournament. Marshall has clinched the No. 2 seed and will begin play on Friday either against the No. 7 or 10 seeded team. |
