Compton Ready For NCAA Championships

6/6/2003

  • Schedule of Events

Marshall's Erin Compton will be Marshall's lone competitor at the NCAA Championships. She competes Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the discus throw.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall track and field superstar Erin Compton (Oak Hill, W.Va.) begins her quest for a NCAA discus championship Wednesday, June 11 at 10 a.m. on the campus of California State University in Sacramento, California. This has been the goal of the senior standout from day one.

Compton is Marshall’s only athlete competing at the NCAA Championships and becomes the first Marshall athlete under the new format. She goes into the competition seeded 24th out of 28 competitors. Nebraska’s Becky Breisch is the top seed with a toss of 192-6.75.

The NCAA Championships cap off what has already been a storybook season. Compton has claimed 6-of-8 discus championships this season, including the 2003 Mid-American Conference Discus Championship and the college women’s discus throw at the historic Penn Relays.

Like most meets this season, a bigger goal is in sight for the Oak Hill, W.Va. native. If Compton can throw 7-feet-10 inches further than her 171-feet-0 inches throw at the NCAA East Regional Championships she will obtain the ‘A’ standard qualifier for the United States Track and Field Championships, June 19-22 in Palo Alto, Calif. Hitting the ‘A’ standard will give Compton a free trip to the championships.

Compton could obtain the ‘B’ standard mark by throwing 4-feet-6 inches further than her NCAA regional throw. Passing the ‘B’ standard could give her a wild card entry to the U.S. Track and Field Championships, only if additional competitors are needed to fill additional spots.

The NCAA Championships kick-off Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the qualifying round of the discus throw. The finals are scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. Select events will be televised on CBS Saturday at 3 p.m.
