Men's Soccer Falls to Akron in Semifinals of MAC Tournament 2-1

Akron, Ohio-The Marshall University men’s soccer team fell to the University of Akron 2-1 today in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference tournament at Lee Jackson Field.
The loss ends the season for Marshall. The Thundering Herd finishes with a record of 12-7-0. Akron, 10-5-1, moves to the championship game against the University of Kentucky, who defeated Bowling Green State University 1-0 earlier today.
The Zips opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Will Kletzien took a pass from Hans Jorgen Haugland and put it past a diving Matt Salmon.
Akron added the game-winning goal in the 23rd minute when Tim Cooper intercepted a pass and scored on a blast from 25 yards out. Kletzien and Orjan Bjaneso assisted on the goal.
The Thundering Herd, however, fought back in the second half. In the 78th minute, a cross by Wayne Bennett was deflected by an Akron defender into the back of the net.
Marshall had several other chances in the second half, but the Akron defense and goalkeeper Kyle Milligan made several key plays in preserving the victory for the Zips.
In the match, Akron outshot Marshall 10-8.
The loss marks the end of the career for seniors Wayne Bennett, Chris Mellecker, Dallas Tennant, Abdul Wahab Lubega, Grant Wortz and Chris Varnado.
