HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team, seeded No. 5, opens Conference USA tournament play at 6 p.m. Wednesday, battling No. 4-seed Florida International at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU in Dallas, Texas. The Thundering Herd has posted a 5-1-1 record in its last seven matches after opening the season with a 2-7-1 mark.
Marshall (7-8-2, 4-3-2 Conference USA) will be out to avenge its most embarrassing defeat of the season. The Golden Panthers handed the Herd a 7-0 defeat Oct. 2 in Miami, as freshman forward Levi Coleman recorded a hat trick to lead the offensive onslaught.
After a 4-1 defeat to SMU Oct. 7, the Herd defense has turned things around, allowing just four goals over the last seven games. Goalkeeper Greg Terhune (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) has been stellar in that stretch, recording a 0.58 goals against average and three shutouts.
Overall, the Herd has notched three straight shutouts and has not allowed a goal in the last 326:44 of action, dating back to the 53:16 mark of the Oct. 21 UAB match. Terhune has been in goal for 282:59 of that stretch. Marshall is one shutout shy of tying the school record for consecutive shutouts, set in 1997.
FIU (8-6-2, 4-3-2) is paced by Carron Williams, who owns a team-best eight goals and 17 points. Goalkeeper Shawn Crowe has played in 14 games and posted a 6-5-2 record and 1.53 GAA.
The Marshall-FIU winner battles the victor of the No. 1-seed SMU-No. 8-seed Tulsa match at 8:30 p.m. Friday. On the other side of the bracket, No. 3 UAB battles No. 6 Memphis, and No. 2 South Carolina takes on No. 7 Kentucky.
