Men's Soccer Downs Mount St. Mary's on Senior Day 3-0

Huntington, W.Va.-The Marshall University men’s soccer team defeated Mount St. Mary’s College 3-0 in the final regular season game of the season today at Sam Hood Field.
“It was a good tune-up for us going into the conference tournament,” head coach Bob Gray said. “They beat us last year and it was great to see our team get some momentum and win one for our seniors. We put a solid game together today.”
Chris Donovan opened the scoring for the Thundering Herd. In the 32nd minute, Donovan put a shot past a diving goalkeeper. The goal was assisted by Robert Ngumire and Abdul Wahab Lubega.
Ngumire extended Marshall’s lead in the 37th minute. Dave Spaulding passed ahead to Wahab Lubega who found a streaking Ngumire in the box. Ngumire was able to control the pass and chip it over the charging goalkeeper.
Byron Carmichael ended the scoring for the Thundering Herd. In the 44th minute, Carmichael took a pass from Donovan and Dennis Ahebwa and was able to force the goalkeeper out of position and chip the ball into the back of the net. The goal was his 15th of the season.
Matt Salmon made four saves for Marshall in recording his second consecutive shutout.
In the match, Marshall outshot the Mountaineers 24-13.
The match marked the final home game for seniors Wayne Bennett, Chris Mellecker, Dallas Tennant, Chris Varnado, Wahab Lubega and Grant Wortz.
“My time at Marshall has been great,” senior defender Wayne Bennett said. “It has gone by extremely quickly. Hopefully, we can continue the winning streak in the conference tournament and extend my career.”
Marshall will now move on to the conference tournament in Akron, Ohio, the weekend of November 9, 2001. The Thundering Herd have secured the third seed and will play either Northern Illinois University, Western Michigan University or Bowling Green State University. Time and opponent will be determined on Monday, November 5, 2001.
