Herd Baseball Inks Two More
6/19/2002
Marshall University baseball coach Dave Piepenbrink announced today the signing of two more players for the 2003 season.
Joining the Thundering Herd program next season will be Brad Helm, a left-handed hitting and throwing outfielder from Downingtown, PA. Last season at Mesa (AZ) Community College Helm batted .348 while scoring 51 runs for a team that went 45-15.
Helm produced 11 doubles, four triples and two home runs last spring while driving in 41 runs and stealing 10 bases.
“Brad is cut from much the same mold as David Colangelo and we expect him to help fill the void left by Colangelo in the outfield,” Piepenbrink said.
The Herd’s second signee is right-handed pitcher Mike Marchyshyn from Iowa Central Community College. A native of Marcum, Ontario -- the same town that produced current Herd shortstop Mike Koitsopolous -- Marchyshyn posted a 3-2 record last spring with one save in 27 1/3 innings of work. He walked just four hitters while striking out 23.
“Mike will be a sophomore next year and comes in with a lot of experience coming out of the bullpen,” Herd pitching coach Tom Carty said. “He can work either in middle relief or as a spot starter and should give us some depth in those roles.”
That tandem joins previous Herd signees Chris Koutsavlis (LHP, Mt. Lebanon, PA), Fritz Conrad (LHP, Daytona Beach, FL), David Goodson (LHP, Tallmadge, Ohio), Corie O’Bryan (3B, Frederick, MD, Community College) and Scott Henning (LHP/OF, Cecil County, MD, Community College).
Piepenbrink said he expects to receive commitments from several more players this summer.
