Marquette Falls Short at Central Florida, 4-3
April 8, 2007
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Marquette women's tennis team dropped its second straight non-conference match of the weekend on Sunday, 4-3, to Central Florida at the UCF Tennis Complex. Marquette was without the services of freshman Kylie Moore and sophomore Robin Metzler. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 11-12 overall on the season. "I am very proud of the way the team stepped up today," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We played a lot smarter and better than we did against Stetson and almost pulled off the win. Over the next 10 days, we are going to continue to improve and take it into the conference tournament." Marquette got off to a strong start by winning two of the three doubles matches for the 1-0 overall lead. The no. 1 doubles tandem of sophomore Lauren Little and junior Shannon Brown pulled off an 8-6 win over their UCF counterpart, while senior Francina Bonnelly and junior Erin Watkins were victorious at the no. 3 slot, 8-5. The Golden Eagles couldn't hang on to the advantage as the Knights used four straight-set singles wins to capture the overall win. Junior Shannon Brown stretched her win streak to 12 matches as she took down Megan Hunter in thrilling fashion at no. 4 singles, 7-5, 7-6 and 11-9 in the tie-breaker. Little had Marquette's other singles win of the afternoon as she defeated Elvira Serrot, 7-5, 6-1, at the top singles position. Marquette will be back in action at the Helfaer Tennis Center on Thursday, April 12, when it hosts BIG EAST Conference foe DePaul at 4 p.m.
