Connelly's Hat Trick Pushes No. 12 Marquette Past Cincinnati, 4-3
Oct. 14, 2005
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The No. 12 ranked Golden Eagles picked up their 13th win of the season - and sixth in BIG EAST play - tonight, 4-3, at Cincinnati. Junior Meghan Connelly keyed the Marquette (13-2-1, 6-2 BIG EAST) offense tonight, tallying the first hat trick of her collegiate career tonight, while also tallying an assist. Her first goal came in early in the match - at the 8:41 mark - connecting off a rebound of her first attempt at the goal. Lindsay Michuda was credited with the assist. At the 15:37 mark, Christy Zwolski scored her team-best eighth goal of the season, with Connelly assisting on the play. She currently leads the Golden Eagles with six assists on the season. Connelly found the back of the net for her second goal at the 21:49 mark, again off the foot of Lindsay Michuda, as Marquette took a quick 3-0 advantage. The Bearcats (3-9-2, 1-6-1 BIG EAST) added two unanswered tallies of their own, at the 26:06 and 42:04 marks and the Golden Eagles entered the break with a 3-2 lead. In the second half, the junior midfielder made it a hat trick in the 51st minute, off an assist by Lauren Weber. Cincinnati would add another goal in the 63rd minute but was unable to get any closer. "I'm happy with the result from tonight," said head coach Markus Roeders. "I think we did a lot of things right out there, but we also made some mistakes and they took advantage of them." But he was quick to credit the efforts of Connelly and her play on the offensive side of the ball: "Meghan had a great day, playing in her hometown and we're happy for it. She played a huge role in our win tonight." For the match, Marquette outshot the Bearcats, 19-13. Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Boyer stopped five shots in the win.
"We're happy for the road win - never an easy task in this league - and now we turn our attention to Sunday against another tough opponent." On Sunday, the Golden Eagles travel to Louisville to face the Cardinals. Gametime is set for 2 p.m. |
