No. 20 Women's Soccer Team Dominates UWGB, Wins 1-0
Aug. 4, 2005
GREEN BAY, Wis. - Appleton native Alison Loughrin scored the Golden Eagles' only goal despite launching 24 shots as a team as 20th-ranked Marquette (4-0) defeated Wis.-Green Bay, 1-0. Loughrin's goal came in the 51st minute as she beat UWGB's Brooke Wikgren from six yards out on a one-timer. Britini Benage scored her first point of the season, feeding Loughrin on a cross for the assist. Loughrin led the team with six shots on a night in which Marquette dominated the offensive play. Two of her shots were on goal as were two of five shots from midfielder Julie Thompson. Midfielder Meghan Connelly also recorded four shots for Marquette. The Golden Eagles had seven shots on goal, forcing six saves by Wikgren. UWGB was able to get two of its shots on net as MU keeper Laura Boyer made two saves, recording her second shutout of the season. Marquette's dominating offensive play forced the Phoenix into an aggressive defensive style. The Phoenix picked up 21 fouls and had five yellow cards, including two from Natalie Brown, who picked up her second in the 67th minute, making UWGB's come-from-behind efforts more difficult. The win improves Marquette to 4-0 for the first time since the 2000 season. Marquette has never started a season 5-0. Marquette returns to action on Wednesday, September 7 hitting the road to take on the second consecutive in-state rival Wis.-Milwaukee at 4 p.m. at Engelmann Field.
