Men's Tennis Concludes Fall Season
Oct. 29, 2006
KALAMAZOO - In their final day of competition at the Vredevelt Invitational, the Marquette men's tennis team earned three of four doubles wins against Michigan State and two of three against DePaul. "We played Michigan State to start the day and had a lot of intensity," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "We were intense in that match and our level of play showed that. We were able to win three of the four matches. We then went straight back on the court against Western Michigan and we played flat. We lacked intensity in those matches. We switched line-ups every single time and against DePaul they came out ready to play. However, for us to be good at doubles we are going to have to have a consistent energy, especially when you are playing eight game pro sets against good teams." Brett Binkley and Trent Hagan captured a win at no. 1 against Michigan State's Michael Flowers and John Allare, 8-6. Pete Van Lieshout and Mark Rutherfod took down the Spartan's Alex Forger and Jason Norville at no. 2, while Tomek Czernuszewicz and Greg Sirotek defeated Brendan Kinkopf and Alex Allon, 8-6. Against the Blue Demon's, Eric Fleming teamed with Rutherford to beat Jack Komar and Danny Wilson, 8-3. Junior's Pete Van Lieshout and Binkley took care of Vanja Grgec and Chris Nowak, 8-5. With this tournament Marquette concludes their fall season. The Golden Eagles will be back in action Sat. Jan 20 when they head to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan. "I still am a little unsettled with our doubles play but this tournament was good practice because we got to play six doubles matches," said Rodecap. "We were able to mix and match guys and see where there is chemistry. Now it's more about focusing on the individual side their game."
