Golden Eagles suffer home loss
MILWAUKEE — Marquette couldn't capitalize on several second half chances and fell to Georgetown in men's soccer, 1-0.
Despite several chances in the first half for Marquette (5-8-1, 1-6-1 BIG EAST), Georgetown struck with the match's first goal in the 35th minute. Dan Grasso took a turnover deep in the MU end and looped a shot over goalkeeper Steven Grow.
"The goal was good for them," head coach Steve Adlard said. "We were in a bit of an attacking mode, and we weren't scared for them to score. They turned on us and it came out of the blue."
Marquette played most of the match with a man advantage. Georgetown's Benjamin Jefferson-Dow was sent off with a red card in the 36th minute for a rough tackle, but MU wasn't able to take advantage of the booking.
Marquette had a good opportunity 15 minutes into the second half. Blair Kohlmeyer crossed a ball to the middle that Dan Addis headed on goal, but GU keeper Andrew Keszler made the save at the top of the cross bar and controlled the rebound.
In the 71st minute, Marquette had a chance with the net empty as Keszler came out to grab a loose ball, but couldn't control it, however, Marquette was unable to get a foot on the ball before it went out of play.
Two minutes later, Kohlmeyer eluded a GU defender and blasted an open shot that went just wide. One minute later, Ryan Nikchevich put a shot on Keszler saved, eight yards out of the net.
"Nothing stopped us, we just didn't finish our chances," Adlard said. "We had an open goal twice, but put it wide both times. We're not ruthless enough; we're not clinical enough."
Nikchevich had another attempt as time was about to expire, but it was wide as well. Marquette outshot Georgetown (9-7, 5-4 BIG EAST) 19-6 for the contest.
"We're playing well, we're getting our chances, we're just not finishing them," Adlard added.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at Seton Hall at 7 p.m. EST.
