Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's soccer team (2-8-1, 1-5-0 BIG EAST) opened the scoring Saturday afternoon at Seton Hall (5-6, 2-3-0 BIG EAST), but watched the Pirates pull away in the second half to post a 5-1 decision over the Golden Eagles in BIG EAST action. "Today was a case of getting beat by a better team," head coach Louis Bennett. "They (Seton Hall) put on a clinic in three phases - finishing, quality first touches and movement away from the ball." Freshman defender Scott Miller netted his first career goal to start the scoring at the 22:30 mark of the first half. MU earned a corner kick and Miller headed a second MU opportunity past SHU keeper Paul McHenry for the 1-0 advantage. Junior Dan Addis and freshman Anthony Colaizzi picked up assists on the play. Momentum turned the Pirates' way in the closing minutes of the first half. SHU's Carlos Salazar collected the equalizer at the 42:44 mark on a free kick. Seton Hall's offense continued to click early in the second half, resulting in four goals in just over 20 minutes of game action. SHU finished the afternoon with a 23-14 advantage in overall shots, but the margin was just 10-7 in attempts on goal. Marquette did finish with an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks, one of which resulted in Miller's score.
"We started poorly, but were able to hang in there as Seton Hall showered the goal with shots," Bennett said. "We just weren't up to the challenge in the second half and were outplayed." |
