Cross Country Battles UNH, Heat

ORONO, Maine - University of Maine junior Joshua Trevino (Rochester, N.H.) finished first in the men's race and sophomore Shelby Howe (Columbia, Maine) won the women's race as the Black Bear cross country teams competed in a dual meet with the University of New Hampshire on Saturday morning. UNH claimed the men's competition, finishing with 20 points while Maine had 41. The Wildcats also won on the women's side with 21 points as the Black Bears had 35.

Trevino led the field with a time of 26:10 on the five-mile course. Sophomore Tyler Alexander (Richmond, Vt.) was the other Maine runner to finish in the top ten, placing ninth with a time of 27:27.

In the women's race, Howe finished with a time of 19:24 on the 5K course. Fellow sophomore Brie Jellison (Ellsworth, Maine) posted a fifth-place finish at 19:56. Freshman Erin Lawlor (Waterville, Maine) had a time of 20:35 to place eighth overall, while senior Charlotte Howley (Wilton, Maine) finished 10th with a time of 20:41.

Both squads battled hot conditions, with the temperature reaching above 85 degrees.

On Saturday, Oct. 2, Black Bears will host the 13th Annual Murray Keatinge Invitational. The men will start at 11 a.m., with the women starting at noon. The race field includes 12 teams in the men's race and 11 on the women's side.
