ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine cross country teams opened the season on Friday afternoon with a dual meet against New Hampshire on the Maine cross country course. The Black Bear men won 24-32 over the Wildcats, while the women were defeated 20-51. Maine won both individual races, as Kirby Davis was the top men's finisher and Jessica Belliveau was the top female finisher.

"It was a good first meet for the men," said head coach Mark Lech. "Both teams were missing some top runners, but I was encouraged by several of the freshmen who ran a good race for their first meet and they will continue to improve. For the women, I was mildly surprised by Jessica Belliveau. I knew she would be a good runner, but she is a great competitor and held the lead for the whole race. I am excited about the rest of the season for both teams."

For the men, Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) took first place in 25:23 in the five mile race. Joshua Trevino (Rochester, N.H.) was second in 25:33, while David Englehutt (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) was fourth in 25:55. Jon McGonagle (Portland, Maine) was sixth overall in 26:11, and freshman Miles Bartlett (Casco, Maine) rounded out the top five scorers in 26:20.

In the women's race, freshman Jessica Belliveau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) was first overall with a time of 18:14 on the five kilometer course. Shelby Howe (Columbia, Maine) was ninth overall in 19:26, while freshman Jolene Belanger (Glenburn, Maine) was eleventh in 19:41. Laura Brustolon (Mystic, Conn.) finished in 20:01 and Teig Choroszy (Saco, Maine) crossed the line in 20:15 to round out the top five scorers.

The Black Bears will travel to Amherst next weekend to face Massachusetts. The next home meet will be the Murray Keatinge Invitational on September 30. For more information on Maine Athletics, please visit www.GoBlackBears.com.
