Fotter Earns America East Volleyball Player of the Week Award
Nov. 15, 2004 BOSTON - University of Maine junior middle blocker Shannan Fotter (Riverside, Calif.) was named America East Conference Volleyball Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Black Bears (18-10, 10-4) to a pair of conference victories. She earns the honor for the first time in her career. In two matches, Fotter recorded 35 kills (3.50 per game) and had a .468 hitting percentage. She also totaled 10 blocks, bringing her season tally to 99, establishing a new school single-season record. In a 3-2 win over Albany, the junior had 16 kills and added four blocks to help the Black Bears hand the Great Danes their first league loss of the season and also snap an 18-match winning streak. Fotter led all players with 19 kills and a .485 hitting percentage in a 3-2 regular season finale victory against Binghamton. In that match, she also added six blocks. For the season, she leads the team, and is second in the league with a .346 hitting percentage. Her 1.03 blocks per game place her third among America East leaders. Maine, which has won its last four contests, will continue its season this weekend at the conference championship in Albany, N.Y. The third-seeded Black Bears will play No. 2 Northeastern on Friday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Top-seeded Albany and No. 4 Binghamton will play in the other semifinal. The semifinal winners will meet on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. in the title match.
