Volleyball Returns Home for Two Conference Matchups

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine volleyball team hosts two America East Conference matches this weekend. The Black Bears will play Northeastern on Friday evening and then face Hartford at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Admission to both matches at Memorial Gymnasium is free.

Maine vs. Northeastern Game Notes:

Maine (11-8, 3-2 America East) returns home to face Northeastern (13-8, 4-1) this evening. After winning 10-straight matches, the Black Bears have dropped two in a row. The Huskies have won two consecutive contests.

Last year, the two teams split the season series. Northeastern won 3-0 at home and the Black Bears claimed a 3-2 victory in Orono.

Last Time Out:

The Black Bears lost a pair of league matches on the road last weekend. Junior Kaili Jordan tallied 18 kills and sophomore Shelly Seipp had 44 assists as Maine fell to Binghamton, 3-2. The Bearcats established a school record with 26 total team blocks.

Senior Brittany Howe had 10 kills and a .600 hitting percentage in a 3-0 loss at Albany. The Great Danes hit .506 as a squad.

On Deck:

Maine hosts Hartford for an America East contest on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Black Bears swept the season series a year ago.

Home Court Advantage:

This season, Maine has already won seven matches at home, with six coming in Memorial Gym. Last year, the team only won four contests at home.

Maine Coaching Staff:

The Black Bears are coached by Lynn Theehs (Wisconsin-Parkside `90) who is in her first season at Maine. She is assisted by Amy Schreiber (IUPUI `03) and Leah Bernier (Maine `02).

Scouting the Huskies:

The Huskies defeated visiting UMBC, 3-2, last Saturday. Through games of Oct. 17, Northeastern was second in the conference standings, just ahead of Maine.

Sophomore Whitney Turner is third in the league, averaging 4.05 kills per game. Senior Ashley Adamczyk leads the conference with 5.40 digs per game.

Freshman Kira Butera was named America East Rookie of the Week on Oct. 18 after recording two double-doubles (kills, digs) last weekend. Butera posted 15 kills and 16 digs against Stony Brook and 28 digs and a team-high 19 kills versus UMBC.

The Huskies are coached by Ken Nichols (UMass-Dartmouth `89), who is in his fifth season.
