Volleyball Defeats UMBC In Four Games
Nov. 3, 2005
ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine volleyball team downed UMBC in four games by a count of 3-1 Thursday night at Memorial Gym in Orono. The Black Bears, who won by scores of 30-16, 25-30, 30-25 and 30-19, improved to 9-11 overall and 6-3 in America East. UMBC dipped to 10-16 and 3-6 in the conference. Freshman Amy Lawson (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) was one of several key performers on the night for Maine. Lawson had 11 kills while registering nine blocks. Senior co-captain Leah Guidinger (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) had a match-high 23 kills, while classmate Shannon Fotter (Riverside, Calif.) added 13. Senior Kaili Jordan (Raymore, Saskatchewan) had 12 kills, while junior setter Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) registered 55 assists and four service aces. Maine jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first game and never looked back in winning by 14. A pair of blocks by Lawson and two kills from Guidinger sparked the early and deciding run for Maine. The second game went back and forth. An attack error by Jordan extended UMBC's lead out to 16-11 midway through it. However, the Black Bears mounted a five-point rally, which was capped by a Jordan service ace, to knot it at 16. The Retrievers responded and went up moments later by a count of 24-19. Maine never got closer than four points the rest of the way as UMBC evened the match at one win apiece. The third game started similar to the second one. UMBC grabbed a 10-7 lead early, but the Black Bears answered by scoring six of the next seven points to go up 13-11. The surge was sparked by a Guidinger kill and capped with a Jordan kill. Maine never trailed the rest of the match and took a 2-1 lead with the win.
Game four was a mirror image of the first game as Maine raced out to an 8-1 advantage. The Black Bears led by as many as 13 in the game to win it and clinch the match.
UMBC was led by Sarah Ball's 14 kills, while Jessie Folk added 11. Megan Gross totaled a team-high 30 assists in the match. Maine returns to action Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gym, as it plays host to Binghamton at 12 p.m. The Black Bears will be looking to even the season series with the Bearcats, who pulled out a close 3-2 win earlier this season in Binghamton. |
