Track Takes Part In New England Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's outdoor track teams took part in the New England Championships on Friday and Saturday hosted by MIT. The women were eighth overall out of 36 teams while the men were fourteenth out of 36 teams. For the women, Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) and Kristen Vidlak (Thunder Bay, Ontario) finished second and third respectively in the 800 meters. Pelletier ran the event in 2:12.15, while Vidlak posted a time of 2:15.19. The 4x400 relay team of Lindsay Burlock (Caribou, Maine), Hana Pelletier, Kristen Vidlak and Amanda Virgets (Stevensville, Md.) took second place with a time of 3:55.2. Amanda Virgets was sixth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.53. Katelyn Andrle (Clifton, Maine) was tenth in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:05.24. In the pole vault, Heather Zavaduk (Smithers, British Columbia) was seventh, clearing 3.20 meters. Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) was eighth in the high jump, clearing 1.80 meters. The 4x100 relay team was ninth with a time of 50.51. Lindsay Burlock (Caribou, Maine) was tenth in the 400 meters with a time of 58.80. On the men's side of the meet, Jeffrey Caron (Auburn, Maine) and Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 5000 meters. Caron crossed the finish line in 14:43.22, while Davis finished in 14:48.87. The 4x800 meter relay team of Donald Drake (Portland, Maine), Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine), Daniel Voner (Hallowell, Maine) and Paul Rupprecht (Yonkers, N.Y.) was third with a time of 7:56.8. In the 1500 meters, Paul Rupprecht was sixth with a time of 3:56.2. Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) was eleventh in the 110 meter hurdles in 15.43. In the high jump, Khabir Edwards (Portland, Maine) was ninth, jumping 1.93 meters and Christopher Warren was eleventh, also jumping 1.93 meters.
Next for the Black Bears will be the NCAA Regional Championships on May 26 and 27 in Greensboro, N.C. The four America East Champions, Clarissa Michalak in the hammer throw, Amanda Virgets in the heptathlon, Jeff Caron in the 5000 meters and Dzigbodi Ababio in the shot put, have qualified to participate.
