Track Has Strong Showing At Massachusetts

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's outdoor track and field teams took part in a multi-team meet on Saturday afternoon hosted by the University of Massachusetts. The women's team was second out of seven teams with 130 points, while the men were third out of eight teams with 78 points. Maine was strongest in the field events, accounting for four of the seven first place finishes for the Black Bears.

In the women's field events, Kayla Rubin (Sanford, Maine) was second overall in the javalin with a throw of 33.48 meters. In the shot put, Maegan Burke (Kennebunk, Maine) was third at 11.69 meters and Micralyn Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) was fourth at 11.47 meters. Wiechman was also fourth in the discus at 36.54 meters. In the hammer throw, Clarissa Michalak (Cumberland, Maine) was second at 48.82 meters and Wiechman was third at 43.17 meters. In the long jump, Rachel McCaslin (Westbrook, Maine) was third at 5.30 meters. The triple jump finishers were led by Tess Perry (Farmington, Maine) in first place at 10.93 meters and Katie Donnelly (Westbrook, Maine) was second at 10.52 meters. Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) won the high jump at 1.60 meters.

For the women in the track events, Allyson Howatt (Fredericton, New Brunswick) won the 100 meters in 12.66. Courtney Francis (Waltham, Mass.) was third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.30. The Black Bears took three of the top four spots in the 800 meters. Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) was first in 2:12.94, Jessica Belliveau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) second in 2:15.41 and Vanessa Letourneau (Fairfield, Maine) fourth in 2:18.47. Vicki Tolton (Smithers, British Columbia) was fourth in the 200 meters. The 4x400 relay team took first place in 3:57.57 and the 4x100 relay was third.

 

 

In the men's field events, Toby Poirer (Lewiston, Maine) won the javelin with a throw of 55.77 meters, while Blair Johnson (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) was fourth at 47.11 meters. Mark Liimakka (Old Town, Maine) was third in the pole vault, jumping 4.30 meters. Maine took the top two spots in the high jump, led by Jeff Ramos (Turner, Maine) at 1.96 meters with Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) second at 1.91 meters.

For the men in the track events, Miles Bartlett (Casco, Maine) got things started with a second place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:25.60, barely losing at the line to Massachusetts' Peter Fortunato. In the 110 meter hurdles, Maxwell Ludwig (South Portland, Maine) won the event in 15.55. Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine) was third in a very competitive 800 meters with a time of 1:56.52. Maine was third in the 4x100 meter relay and was sixth in the 4x400 meter relay.

The women's meet was won by Boston College with 192 points. Maine was second with 130 points, followed by New Hampshire (128 points), Massachusetts (48 points), Amherst College (47 points), Quinnipiac (15 points) and Stony Brook (12 points). In the men's meet, New Hampshire led the way with 174 points, followed by Massachusetts with 137 points. Maine was third with 78 points, while Boston College (68 points), Stony Brook (58 points), Central Connecticut State (39 points), Quinnipiac (6 points) and Amherst College (3 points) rounded out the field.
