Maine Swimming Defeats Vermont

The University of Maine women's swim team defeated Vermont 170-127 on Saturday at Wallace Pool. The Black Bears had the fastest times in thirteen of the sixteen events. Tal Shpaizer turned in the fastest times in three individual events and was on the 200 medley relay that took first place.

The women started strong by taking the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. The team of Brianna Tibbetts (North Berwick, Maine), Shelbi Settlage (Bothell, Wash.), Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) and Kari Boffa (Falmouth, Maine) was first in 1:51.82. Colleen Miller (Missoula, Mont.) won the 1000 free in 10:46.19, which was followed by a first place finish in the 200 free by Shpaizer with a time of 1:58.27. Tibbetts led Maine in the 100 back with a time of 1:01.91 as the Black Bears took the top three spots. Settlage was first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.05 and Adi Levy (Givatayim, Israel) won the 200 butterfly in 2:10.81. In the one meter diving, Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) led the Black Bears with 233.70 points, and was followed by Samantha Hartery (Bangor, Maine), Jessica Pratt (Eddington, Maine) and Megan Barrett (Farmington, Conn.) in a sweep of the top four spots.

In the 100 free, Boffa and Miller tied for first place with times of 54.79. Courtney Healey (Reading, Mass.) was first in the 200 back with a time of 2:12.83 as Maine took the top three spots. Kiki O'Donnell (Hampden, Maine) took first place in the 200 breast in 2:28.03. Shpaizer had the fastest time in the 100 butterfly at 59.66 and the 200 IM at 2:13.62, but swam as an exhibition. In the three meter event, Pratt took first place with 214.80 points, followed by Scott and Ashley Schumacher (Cumberland, Maine) in a sweep of the top three places.
