Women's Soccer Falls In America East Title Game in Double Overtime

Nov. 5, 2005

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.-- Boston University's Susan Marschall scored in double-overtime to lift the Terriers past Maine in the America East women's soccer title game on Saturday afternoon in Boston, Mass. The Black Bears were playing in their third-straight America East Championship game.

"I'm extremely proud of my team," said Maine head coach Scott Atherley. "Although the result was disappointing, the effort and heart we displayed today was second to none. We can walk away today knowing we left everything on the field and could have done nothing more to influence the outcome of the game."

Marschall took a corner kick from teammate Meghann Cook and sent it past America East Goalkeeper of the Year Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) to give the Terriers the victory at 101:05.

Boston University gained a quick 1-0 advantage in the first half as Erica Lee took a Lauren Erwin pass and sent it to the back of the net at the 11:43 mark. The Terriers played with that one-goal edge for just under 68 minutes until the Black Bears evened the game at one goal apiece.

Maine's Heather Hathorn (Scarborough, Maine) scored an unassisted goal at 79:04 to knot the game at 1-1. For Hathorn, it was her school-record 35th goal of her illustrious career.

The two teams battled for the next 26 minutes until Marschall ended the contest with her game-winner. For her efforts, Marschall was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Performer.

Phillips made three saves in goal for the Black Bears. She falls to 6-2-2 on the season.

Marshall and Cook were joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Brooke Bingham and Melissa Shulman, Maine's Phillips, Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec) and Linda Consolante (Beaconsfield, Quebec), Binghamton's Kim Povill and Meghann Taylor, UMBC's Mary Hearin and New Hampshire's Debbie Newman and Julie Randall.

For the first time in conference history, every game of the league tournament went into extra sessions.

Maine ends the season with a record of 11-6-2. The game was the final game for Maine seniors Tanya Adorno (Farmington, Conn.), Angela Clark (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Erin Corey (Winslow, Maine), Maureen McHugh (Scarborough, Maine), Elise Tebbetts (Waterville, Maine), Hathorn and Consolante. This senior class has led Maine to a record of 44-23-7 and three America East Title appearances, in addition to setting nearly every University of Maine record over the past four years.
