Women's Ice Hockey Comes Back For 4-2 Win Over Vermont
Feb. 11, 2007
BURLINGTON, Vt. - A goal by Taryn Peacock with 2:01 to play broke a 2-2 deadlock and lifted the University of Maine women's ice hockey team to a 4-2 comeback win over Vermont in Hockey East action Sunday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Black Bears rallied from a 2-0 deficit midway through the contest for the victory. The win gives Maine (9-17-1, 4-12-2 Hockey East) a three-game sweep over the Catamounts (3-23-2, 1-15-1). Vermont carried the play in the early going and Sarah Smiddy opened the scoring at 17:35 in the first period with her third goal of the season. On assists from Ashley Richter and Korrie Peckham, Smiddy's persistence paid off as she punched in a rebound of two of her shots in the goalmouth. Jessica Murphy made it 2-0 for the Catamounts with a power play goal just 2:18 into the second stanza. Murphy in the high slot redirected passes from Smiddy and Karen Sentoff for her third goal of the season and her second in three games. Maine's Vanessa Vani (St. Catherines, Ontario) cut the lead in half with a power play goal at 9:18 beating Vermont goalie Shivaun Siegl on a wraparound. Kelly Law (Markham, Ontario) tied the game 2:22 into the third period as her high shot from the left point through traffic found the net. Law had help on the goal from Sonia Corriveau (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) and Brigitte Laflamme (St.-Augustin, Quebec). On the unassisted game-winner, Vermont had trouble clearing the puck from its zone and Peacock (Calgary, Alberta) banged in a loose puck in a goalmouth scramble. Sonia Corriveau added an insurance tally for the Black Bears with 41 seconds left with an assist from Kate Sunstrum (London, Ontario).
In goal, Maine's Genevieve Turgeon (Lac Beauport, Quebec) had 19 saves and two goals against. For Vermont, Shivaun Siegl had 14 saves with four goals against. Maine had five penalties for ten minutes and Vermont had four penalties for eight minutes. On power plays, Maine was 2-4 and Vermont was 1-5. Despite a 9-2 Maine edge in shots in the final period, Vermont outshot the Black Bears, 21-18, in the game. Maine will return to Alfond Arena for the final home series of the season on February 17 and 18 against Boston University.
