Maine Defeats UConn 3-2

Jan. 22, 2005

Box Score

STORRS, Conn. (January 22, 2005) - Maine defender Kelly Law (Markham, Ontario) scored with 5:48 remaining in the game to give the Black Bears a 3-2 win over the University of Connecticut women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon at the Freitas Ice Forum. Maine was able to gain two valuable points in the Hockey East conference game and was able to bounce back after yesterday's 4-1 loss for a weekend split. Maine improves to 12-7-3 (3-5-2 Hockey East) while the defeat drops UConn to 7-10-5 on the season (3-4-1 Hockey East).

Senior captain Tristan Desmet (Strathmore, Alberta) scored a power play goal 13:23 into the first period to give Maine their first one-goal lead of the game. She knocked in the rebound of a Brigit Laflamme (St. Augustin, Quebec) shot to put the Black Bears up 1-0. Desmet now has 12 goals on the season with Laflamme tallying her ninth assist on the year.

UConn knotted up the score a 1-1 when Jacquelyn McGuire notched her second goal of the weekend at 17:26. Katherine Van Deveire and Natalie Vibert recorded assists on the power play goal. Maine tallied 12 shots in the first stanza to UConn's three.

The Black Bears jumped back into the lead just 36 seconds into the second period when Andrea Steranko (Regina, Saskatchewan) scored her second goal of the weekend and her seventh on the year. She skated the puck in and tucked it under UConn goaltender Shannon Murphy's glove to move the score to 2-1. Steranko was assisted by Desmet, who notched her third point in two games.

Maine held their lead throughout the second stanza until the final minutes of the period. Then, at 18:23, the Huskies tied the game again when a pass by a Maine player went off Van Deveire past goaltender Rachel Gettings (Watervliet, New York) into the Black Bear net. Through two periods, the Black Bears had a 22-11 advantage in shots.

The score remained tied at 2-2 until Law scored to put Maine up 3-2. It's Law's first goal of the season and fifth point on the year. UConn skated the final 2:39 with an empty net on an attempt to tie the score, and even had a 6-on-4 opportunity with a power play, but could not successfully get anything past Gettings and the Maine defense.

For the game, Maine out-shot Connecticut 29-20. Both teams scored a power play goal, with the Black Bears going 1-for-5 and the Huskies going 1-for-3.

Maine will travel to Providence, Rhode Island to play an away-and-away series with the Providence Friars on February 5-6. Both Saturday and Sunday games will begin at 2pm.
