Mendell Named to STX/NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region First Team
Nov. 16, 2004 ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine senior Liz Mendell (Palmyra, Maine) was named to the 2004 STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-Northeast Region First Team announced Tuesday, November 16. Teammates Meagan Connolly (Mahopac, N.Y.), Rachael Hilgar (Barto, Pa.) and Jamie Morin (Winslow, Maine) were all named to the Second Team. Mendell was Maine's lone representative on the First Team. She was also named to the 2004 America East First Team. Mendell, who served as a tri-captain, started all 19 games for the Black Bears at back. She scored three goals and added three assists for nine points and had a team-high four defensive saves. Mendell scored Maine's lone goal in its 2-1 loss to Northeastern on October 30. She also chipped in with goals against Michigan and Sacred Heart. Mendell led a defense that allowed just 1.31 goals per game. Connolly was named to the All-Northeast Region Second Team. Connolly was named to the America Second Team. As a back, ranked tied for fourth on the team in scoring with five goals and five assists for 15 points. She was a key part of Maine's defense that recorded four shutouts on the season. Connolly scored a pair of goals in Maine's 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart. She also had a goal against The Ohio State University, UMBC and the University of Rhode Island. Connolly registered a seven-game scoring streak before seeing it come to an end against Northeastern on October. 30. Hilgar was also named to the Second Team. It is one of a handful of honors for Hilgar, who recently was also named to the 2004 America East First Team along with being named to the 2004 America East All-Tournament team. Hilgar led Maine in scoring with nine goals and seven assists for 25 points. It is the second year in a row that she has led the team in scoring. Hilgar has started all 19 games this season for the Black Bears. She scored two goals in Maine's 4-3 overtime loss to Michigan and also chipped in with a pair of goals against Vermont. She scored Maine's lone goal in the season-ending loss to Northeastern in the America East semifinals. Morin rounded out Maine's trio on the Second Team. She was also named to the America East Second Team. Morin, a goalkeeper, has had a remarkable season in her first year as a starter. She is 12-7 with a 1.32 goals against average and a .814 save percentage. She finished ninth in the nation in save percentage and 15th in goals against average. Morin has recorded four shutouts on the season, including a 2-0 blanking of Harvard, who was ranked 16th in the nation at the time. The Black Bears were 12-7 on the season and fell to Northeastern in the semifinals of the America East tournament.
