BOSTON, Mass.-- University of Maine field hockey players Rachael Hilgar (Barto, Pa.) and Liz Mendell (Palmyra, Maine) were both named to the 2004 America East Field Hockey All-Conference First Team announced at the annual awards banquet on Thursday night at Boston University. Meagan Connolly (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Jamie Morin (Winslow, Maine) both received America East Second Team honors.

Hilgar, a 2003 second team selection, led Maine in scoring with eight goals and seven assists for 23 points. It is the second year in a row that she has led the team in scoring. Hilgar has started all 18 games this season for the Black Bears. She scored two goals in Maine's 4-3 overtime loss to Michgan and also chipped in with a pair of goals against Vermont.

Mendell, who serves as a tri-captain, has started all 18 games for the Black Bears at back. She has three goals and three assists for nine points and a team-high four defensive saves. Mendell scored Maine's lone goal in its 2-1 loss to Northeastern last weekend. She has also chipped in with goals against Michigan and Sacred Heart. Mendell has led a defense that has allowed just 1.19 goals per game.

Connolly, a back, ranks tied for fourth on the team in scoring with five goals and five assists for 15 points. She has been a key part of Maine's defense that has recorded four shutouts on the season. Connolly scored a pair of goals in Maine's 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart. She also had a goal against The Ohio State University, UMBC and the University of Rhode Island. Connolly registered a seven-game scoring streak before seeing it come to an end against Northeastern last weekend.

Morin, a goalkeeper, has had a remarkable season in her first year as a starter. She is 12-6 with a 1.29 goals against average and a .811 save percentage. She ranks 11th in the nation in save percentage and 15th in goals against average. Morin has recorded four shutouts on the season, including a 2-0 blanking of Harvard, who was ranked 16th in the nation at the time.

Northeastern's Liane Dixon was named the America East Offensive Player of the Year, while the Huskies Lauren Edelmeier was named the Defensive Player of the Year. The Rookie of the Year honors went to Pam Spuehler of Boston University, while the Terriers Sally Starr earned Coach of the Year honors.

Maine returns to action when it faces Northeastern in the semifinals of the America East Tournament on Friday, November 5. The game will be played at Jack Barry Field in Cambridge, Mass. at 11:30 a.m.
