Maine Field Hockey Blanks UMBC 3-0

BALTIMORE, Md.--The University of Maine field hockey team defeated UMBC 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. Maine got goals from Joanna Fernandes (Mississauga, Ontario), Kim MacDonald (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Kirsten Costa (Harwich, Mass.) while goalie Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine) recorded her third shutout of the season. The Black Bears improve to 11-5 on the season and 4-0 in America East play, while UMBC falls to 2-12, 0-4 in conference play. Maine opened the scoring when Fernandes scored on a penalty stroke with 1:20 remaining in the first half. For Fernandes, it was her third goal of the season and turned out to be the game-winner. Maine added to its lead less than two minutes into the second half. At 36:58, MacDonald scored on a breakaway to give the Black Bears the 2-0 advantage. For MacDonald, it was her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Maine closed out the scoring at 55:57 when MacDonald fed Kirsten Costa who beat Retriever goalie Ashley Benitez. For Costa, it was her first goal of the season. Maine outshot UMBC 18-5 in the game and had a 14-4 advantage in penalty corners. Maine goalie Giroux made two saves in goal for the Black Bears to improve to 9-4 on the season. Benitez made 10 saves in goal for the Retrievers in 65:12. Kathryn Tag played the final 4:48 for UMBC and recorded one save. The Black Bears return to action on Sunday, October 23 when they face Georgetown at 12:00 noon.
