Field Hockey Falls to Sixth Ranked Boston College

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to Boston College on a cool fall Sunday afternoon at Morse Field in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears, who saw their three-game winning streak snapped, fall to 6-9 on the season, while Boston College improves to 12-3 overall. The two teams played through a scoreless first half. Boston College got on the scoreboard early in the second half. Crystal Frates beat Maine goalie Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine) at 41:20. For Frates, it was her 11th goal of the season. The Eagles added a second goal midway through the second half. Bob Dirks had a long shot from the top of the circle beat Giroux at 55:50. For Dirks, it was her team-leading 13th goal of the season. Caitlin Gillen assisted on the goal by Dirks. Maine played a strong game against the sixth-ranked Eagles, but was unable to find any offense. Gina Legge (North Harwich, Mass.) had the best chance of scoring for Maine off a penalty corner, but her shot was stopped by Eagle goalie Julia Berkowitz. Boston College outshot Maine 15-2 in the game. The Eagles had an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners. Giroux made eight saves for Maine and falls to 4-7 on the season. Berkowitz made two saves in goal for the Eagles. She improves to 12-3 on the season. The Black Bears return to action on Sunday, October 22 when they host UMBC at 12:00 noon in the final home game of the regular season. The Black Bears will then close out the season on Saturday, October 28.
