Rainone Leads Maine Field Hockey Past Rhode Island 4-0

ORONO, Maine-- Traci Rainone (East Greenwich, R.I.) scored two goals and added an assist to lead the University of Maine field hockey team to a 4-0 win over the University of Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon on Morse Field at Alfond Stadium in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 8-3 on the season with the win, while the Rams fall to 1-6 on the campaign.

Rainone opened the scoring for Maine 9:20 into the game when she notched her third goal of the season off a penalty corner. Rachael Hilgar (Barto, Pa.) tallied an assist on the goal by Rainone. The duo teamed up again for the second goal, only this time it was Hilgar that got it. Rainone found Hilgar alone in front of the goal cage and she beat URI goalkeeper M.J. Britt for her fifth goal of the season.

Rainone and Hilgar combined again to give Maine a 3-0 lead midway through the second half. Hilgar found Rainone on the side of the goal and she was able to convert for her second goal of the game.

Maine added to its led at 62:57 when Meagan Connolly (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored off a corner. Emily Dooling (Winthrop, Maine) started the corner for the Black Bears and passed to Shaunessy Saucier (Old Town, Maine) who was able to settle the ball for Connolly who blasted the ball past Britt to give Maine the 4-0 lead.

The Black Bears dominated all aspects of the game, outshooting the Rams 31-11, including registering a 21-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Black Bears had 13 corners in the game.

Maine goalkeeper Jamie Morin (Winslow, Maine) made six saves in goal and improves to 8-3 on the campaign. The shutout was the fourth of the season for the reigning America East Player of the Week. Britt made 17 saves in goal for the Rams and falls to 1-1 on the season.
