Field Hockey Falls to Quinnipiac

Quinnipiac University scored a goal in each half and recorded a 2-0 victory over Maine in college field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at Morse Field in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears fall to 3-7 on the season with the loss, while Quinnipiac improves to 3-4.

Maine nearly took an early 1-0 lead when Kim MacDonald (East Greenwich, R.I.) had her shot beat Bobcat goalie Jenna Grossman. Megan Sciascia deflected the ball out of midair to keep the game scoreless.

The Bobcats took the lead at 27:42 when Jaime Cassesse scored her third goal of the season off a penalty corner. Jillian Carroll began the corner with Ann Marie Mangano setting the ball. Quinnipiac took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Bobcats added to their lead midway through the second half. Lauren Kuchmak fed Jennifer Kinchla on a partial breakaway. Kinchla was able to beat Maine goalie Maygan Cassarino (Milford, N.H.) for her third goal of the season.

Maine had several chances to get on the scoreboard late, but were unable to beat Grossman.

Cassarino made three saves for Maine. Grossman finished with 11 stops for the Bobcats.

Maine held a 22-10 advantage in shots. The Black Bear also recorded an 11-3 edge in corners. Gina Legge (North Harwich, Mass.) led Maine in shots with six, including four on goal. Amy Zdrojesky (East Greenville, Pa.) and Kirsten Costa (Harwich, Mass.) each recorded four shots.

The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, September 30 when they play their first America East conference game at Albany.
