Sept. 23, 2007
ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine field hockey team dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Providence on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium in Orono. The loss dropped Maine's record to 4-5 on the season, while Providence improved to 6-3. Courtney Veinotte and Nicole Emery each scored a goal for the Black Bears, while goalkeeper Rebecca Giroux made nine saves. Brooke Anderson and Amy Zdrojesky each picked up an assist in the contest for Maine. The Friars took a 1-0 lead at the 3:40 mark of the first period on a goal by Meghan Holden off a pass from a penalty corner. However, the Black Bears answered a little over a minute later to knot the score at 1-1 when Veinotte took a pass from Anderson in front of the net and slipped it past Friar goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain. Providence scored two more times in the first period to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission. Julie Ruggieri tallied her first goal at the 19:13 mark to make it 2-1 and scored again at the 30:31 mark to make it 3-1. The second period saw a lot of action at midfield without many shots. However, the pace of play picked up late in the second period. Maine's aggressiveness in the offensive zone resulted in a goal at the 63:40 mark to pull within 3-2. The tally came from Emery, who took a deflected shot from Zdrojesky and put it past Chamberlain into the back left corner of the net. Maine had another scoring opportunity in the final seconds, but Chamberlain made a save to preserve the win for the Friars.
The Black Bears return to action on Friday when they play host to Albany at 6 p.m., at Alfond Stadium.
