Maine Plays Saturday Afternoon at Vermont

SCOUTING MAINE:

With a victory at Vermont (12-12, 8-7 AE), first place Maine (17-8, 13-2 AE) can clinch the 2005 regular-season title. Maine comes into the match-up at Patrick Gymnasium riding a 10-game win streak. In their last outing, sophomore forward Bracey Barker (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) chipped in 19 points and added 8 boards as Maine knocked off the visiting Boston University Terriers (11-13, 6-9 AE), 59-56 in America East action on Wednesday night at 7:30pm at Alfond Arena. Senior captain Missy Traversi (Attleboro, Mass.) scored 13 points and junior forward Abby Schrader (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) added 10 points and 8 rebounds in the win. Traversi leads the Black Bears in scoring this year with 13.1 ppg followed by Barker with 11.2 ppg. Senior forward Monica Peterson (Wilmington, Del.) leads Maine in rebounds averaging 6.6 per game.

SCOUTING VERMONT:

Vermont has won two of their last three games and is currently in the middle of the pack of the America East playoff picture with three teams tied for third place, each with 8-7 records. In their last outing, Vermont defeated UMBC, 69-51 with 16 points from Katie McNamara. The Catamounts are coached by Sharon Dawley. Dawley is 1-2 against Maine.

HEAD TO HEAD:

Maine and Vermont rank first and second in the America East in free throw percentage. Maine is top of the conference with a .748 (341 of 456) free throw percentage with Vermont just behind with .741 (334 of 451). Vermont ranks first in the America East averaging just over seven 3-pt. field goals made per game with Maine in the seventh spot averaging 4.56 per game. The Catamounts rank second in scoring offense averaging 66.3 ppg with Maine in fifth averaging 62.7 ppg. Maine is 7-4 while playing on the road to Vermont's 8-2 home record this season.

THE SERIES:

Maine leads the all-time series, 45-19. The two teams have met 64 times as Vermont is Maine's most frequent opponent. The series dates back to the 1975-76 season, which was the first Black Bear campaign. Earlier this season, behind 20 points and 14 rebounds from Monica Peterson, Maine rallied to defeat visiting Vermont, 77-70.
