Women's Basketball Falls to Massachusetts
Dec. 8, 2007 AMHERST, MASS. - The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped a 74-55 decision to Massachusetts on Saturday at the Mullins Center in Amherst. Maine fell to 1-7, while UMass improved to 4-5. Three Black Bears scored in double-figures, including Tanna Ross (20 points), Emily Rousseau (13 points) and Sandra Vaitkute (12 points). It marked the third time this season Ross led the Black Bears in scoring. Vaitkute added seven rebounds in the game. Pam Rosanio led the Minutewomen with 17 points, while Kate Mills chipped in 16 points. Vaitkute scored Maine's initial six points as the first half went back and forth. Maine did hold a pair of one-point leads midway through the opening 20 minutes. A jumper by Rousseau with 3:33 remaining in the half pulled the Black Bears within one at 27-26. However, UMass scored nine-straight points to close out the period and take a 36-26 lead at the intermission. UMass' advantage hovered above double-digits for the final 19 minutes of the game.
Maine returns to action next weekend when it takes on St. John's on Friday at 7 p.m., and then faces St. Francis (NY) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
