Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped a 72-59 decision to Clemson in its 2007-08 season opener on Friday night at Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson, S.C. Maine dropped to 0-1 on the season, while Clemson improved to 1-0.

Freshman guard Tanna Ross led the way for Maine with a game-high 14 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds in the contest. Senior guard Kris Younan added 13 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore forward Brittany Boser logged her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Colleen Kilmurray ripped down a game-high 11 rebounds for Maine in the contest.

The game marked the head coaching debut for Maine's Cindy Blodgett, who played at the school from 1994-98 and led the Black Bears to four-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. She is the school's all-time leading scorer with 3,005 points.

Clemson was led in scoring by Whitney Hood and Morganne Campbell, who each had a team-high 13 points. Lele Hardy pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds for the Tigers.

Clemson opened the game by scoring the first eight points, but the Black Bears roared back with the next 13 points to open up a 13-8 lead with 11:15 remaining in the first half. The run was sparked by four points apiece from Kilmurray and Younan. The Tigers answered by going on an 8-0 run to take a 16-13 lead and never trail the rest of the first half in taking a 34-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Clemson never let its lead slip below double-digits the rest of the second half in earning the win. Ross scored 11 of her game-high 14 points in the second half as Maine cut the deficit to 10 points on three separate occasions.
