Women's Basketball Falls to Stony Brook 84-70

ORONO, Maine - Ashley Underwood (Augusta, Maine) led the University of Maine women's basketball team with a career-high 24 points and a team-high six assists, but it wasn't enough as the Black Bears fall to Stony Brook at Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena. The Seawolves won the first time at Alfond Arena and improved to 19-8 overall and 12-4 in America East play. Maine dropped to 9-18 overall and 5-11 in conference competition. Bracey Barker (Bar Harbor, Maine) chipped in with 15 points and was aided by Lindsey Hugstad-Vaa (Apple Valley, Minn.) who poured in a career-high 13 points, grabbed a career-high nine rebounds and tied a career-high with 3 blocked shots. Margaret Elderton (Havertown, Pa) was Maine's next highest scorer with seven points. The leading scorer for the Seawolves was Leah Getz who scored 19 points and had a team-high six assists while filling in for leading scorer Mykeema Ford who did not play because of an illness. Stony Brook had five players in double-figures, including Getz. In the first half Maine was able to keep pace with the Seawolves. The Black Bears got their second lead of the game on a Elderton three pointer which made it 10-8 early in the first half. Stony Brook fought their way back, but the defense by Maine kept the Black Bears close. With Maine down by one with 7:45 left, Barker hit a three pointer off the glass to give Maine a 19-17 lead. The Black Bears continued to play good defense and led 34-33 at the half. Stony Brook and Maine traded baskets for the first four minutes of the second half, but the Seawolves took the lead on a Jessica Smith jumper with 16:08 left that made it 41-40. The Black Bears tried to claw their way back, but Stony Brook went on a 7-0 run midway through the second half and they never trailed again. The run was sparked by a Smith layup. Stony Brook built up leads of 10 and 12 in the second and closed out the game with a 84-70 win.
After shooting 38 percent in the first half (11-of-29), the Seawolves turned it around and shot 65 percent in the second half (15-of-23). It was the opposite for the Black Bears as they shot 48 percent in the first half (12-of-25), but cooled down and shot 39 percent from the field (9-of-23)in the second half. With the loss, Maine will enter the America East Tournament as the number eight seed. They will travel to Hartford and face the number nine seed Albany. The game tips off at 7 p.m. Thursday at Chase Arena at the University of Hartford. --UM-- |
