Maine Track Competes At Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Maine men's and women's outdoor track and field teams took part in the 113th Penn Relays, which were held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Maine set school records in the women's 4x800 meter relay and 4x200 meter relay on Saturday afternoon.

The women's 4x400 relay started things for Maine on Thursday afternoon as the team of Allyson Howatt (Fredericton, New Brunswick), Tess Perry (Farmington, Maine), Kelsey Bilouris (Livermore, Maine) and Vicki Tolton (Smithers, British Columbia) was sixth in their heat with at time of 4:03.22. Also on Thursday, Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) ran the 5000 meters and finished 29th in 14:58.85.

On Friday, the meet was delayed twice early in the day due to lightning. The men's 4x400 relay team of Maxwell Ludwig (South Portland, Maine), Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine), Matthew Holman (Gardiner, Maine) and Daniel Voner (Dresden, Maine) finished seventh in their heat with a time of 3:22.46. The women's team of Courtney Francis (Waltham, Maine), Rachel McCaslin (Westbrook, Maine), Vicki Tolton and Allyson Howatt ran the 4x100 relay in 49.49.

 

 

In Saturday's events, the women won their heat of the 4x800 relay in 9:00.65, breaking the school record of 9:01.88 set in 2004. The first leg was run by Jessica Belliveau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick), followed by Stephanie Jette (Lovell, Maine), Vanessa Letourneau (Fairfield, Maine) and Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) running the anchor leg. In the women's 4x200 relay, the team of Allyson Howatt, Tess Perry, Kelsey Bilouris and Vicki Tolton ran a 1:42.99, which broke the school record of 1:44.95 which had been set in 2002. The men competed in the 4x800 Championship of America event and were seventh in their heat in 7:47.06. The team of Eric Libby, Miles Bartlett (Casco, Maine), Daniel Voner and Scott O'Connor (East Greenville, Pa.) turned in a faster time than schools such as Duke, Richmond, South Carolina and Albany.

In addition to the Penn Relays, freshman Lauren Forgues (Boothbay, Maine) participated in the 2007 Pan American Race Walking Cup held on April 21 and 22 in Balneario Camboriu, Brazil. Forgues was third overall in the junior women's 10 kilometer race with a time of 51:39. Finishing first was Janeth Guaman of Ecuador in 51:24 and Leslie Guavita of Columbia was second in 51:32.
