Swimming Competes At Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the Harold Anderson Invitational hosted at the University of Rhode Island on December 2 and 3. The Maine women took first place among five teams with 754 points, while the men were third of four teams with 400 points. Tal Shpaizer won three events for the women, while Nathan Richard won two events for the men.

The women began the meet by taking first and second place in the 400 medley relay. In the 200 IM, Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) took first with a time of 2:11.88. Shpaizer added a first place finish in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.50 and a first place finish in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.01. Colleen Miller (Missoula, Montana) was first in the 200 free in 1:58.00 and was also first in the 500 free in 5:12.39. In the 200 butterfly, Adi Levy (Givatayim, Israel) touched first with a time of 2:10.83. Brittany Harrington (Alexandria, Va.) was third in the 1000 free in 10:58.82. In the 400 IM, Kiki O'Donnell (Hampden, Maine) was second with a time of 4:42.65 and she was also second in the 200 breast in 2:29.31. In the 100 breast, O'Donnell was second in 1:10.0 and Shelbi Settlage (Bothell, Wash.) was third in 1:10.30. Kari Boffa (Falmouth, Maine) was third in the 50 free in 25.79 and second in the 100 free in 55.02. In the 200 back, Crystie McGrail (Columbia, Md.) was third with a time of 2:14.73. Maine was also second in the 200 free relay, second in the 400 free relay and first in the 200 medley relay. In the one meter diving event, Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) was first with 192.3 points. Maine took the top three spots in the three meter event, led by Scott with 195.9 points.

 

 

In the men's meet, Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vt.) was first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:01.39, while Chris Card (West Bath, Maine) was second in 1;01.42. In the 200 breast, Eric Palmer (Bangor, Maine) was first in 2:16.69 and Card was second with a time of 2:18.26. Richard added a first place finish in the 100 butterfly in 54.74 and was second in the 200 IM in 2:03.50. In the 400 IM, Martin Fitch (Bangor, Maine) was second with a time of 4:27.76. Michael Goede (Omaha, Neb.) was third in the 100 back in 57.18. Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) took first place in the one meter event with 248.55 points and was second in the three meter with 236.1 points. The Black Bears were third in the 200 medley relay, fourth in the 400 free relay and 400 medley relay.

In the women's meet, Maine had 754 points, followed by Rhode Island with 647.5, Vermont with 514, Providence with 420 and Holy Cross with 324.5. For the men, Rhode Island took first with 597 points, followed by Providence (418), Maine (400) and Holy Cross (283).
