Swimming and Diving places second at Harold Anderson

Kingston, R. I. - The men's and women's swimming and diving teams both placed second at this weekend's Harold Anderson Invitational at the University of Rhode Island. The women's team finished with 676 total points, while the men finished with 492.5. The Rhode Island Rams won both the men's and women's meets on Saturday. The women were fueled by several great performances. Junior Courtney Healey won both the 100 backstroke (1:00.94) and the 200 back (2:09.89). Caitlin Shelley took first place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.39) and 200 breaststroke (2:30.05). In the 200 breaststroke Shelley narrowly beat Kerstin Fenton, who finished in 2:30.27. Megan McLean finished third in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.83) and Candace Coville finished fifth (1:11.47). Maine's freestylers came up big on Saturday as Mimi Chovanec won the 500 free (5:10.66) and the 1000 free (11:12.47), while Colleen Miller won the 100 free (54.94) and the 200 free (1:57.41), and Miller placed third in the 50 free (25.62). Captain Kiki O'Donnell turned in a second place finish in the 200 IM (4:41.35) and she was closely followed by Mackenzie Grobmyer (4:45.01) and Kerstin Fenton (4:47.29). O'Donnell also finished fourth in the 500 free. Grobmyer finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:01.05) and third in the 200 butterfly (2:13.51). Meag Fisher won the 100 butterfly (1:00.96). Junior Adi Levy came in second in the 200 butterfly (2:12.49) and placed fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:21.79). Megan Barrett placed second in the 1 meter diving competition, scoring 196 points, while Samantha Graham finished second in the 3 meter diving, scoring 192.15 points.
The men's team used strong performances in the freestyle events to bring home a second place finish. In the 50 free Cully Wakelin came in second place (22.33) and Kevin Staples (23.04) and Mike Goede (23.11) finished eighth and ninth respectively. Wakelin went on to win the 100 free (48.20) and finish third in the 200 free (1:47.31), while John Quinn finished ninth in both events. Jeremy Bender came in fourth in the 500 free (4:56.63) and Jamie Young followed up Bender, placing sixth (5:07.58). Bender later came in second in the 1000 free, finishing in 10:22.31. Bender and Young finished second and fourth in the 400 yard IM. Goede finished fourth in the 100 backstroke (57.62), and Tyler Isherwood finished in sixth in 58.94. Tyler Cox turned in a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.85) and fourth place in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.95). Dustin Carrier came in sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.99) and seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.50). Isaac Forbes and Keith Burgie placed third and fourth in the 3 meter diving, and in the 1 meter diving Burgie finished fourth while Forbes finished fifth. The Black Bears swimming and diving teams return to action next Saturday, December 8, 2007, when they take on the Terriers of Boston University in Boston. The meet is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. |
