Swimming Downs Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon. The Black Bears women won 192-109, while the men posted a 183.5-107.5 win. Nathan Richard won three events for the men, while Tal Shpaizer won three events for the women.

The women began the meet with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) took first place in the 100 breast in 1:11.03, the 200 IM in 2:15.04 and the 100 free in 55.11. Kelsey Wilson (North Adams, Mass.) won the 1000 free with a time of 11:12.13. In the 50 free, Lauren Viles (Oakland, Maine) took first place with a time of 26.24. Brittany Harrington (Alexandria, Va.) won the 200 free in 2:01.28 and the 200 breast in 2:35.45. Megan Wolters (Cleveland, Miss.) won the 200 back in 2:10.31. In the one meter diving, Maine took the top three spots, lead by Sam Hartery (Bangor, Maine) with 202.64 points. Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) won the three meter event with 203.70 points.

In the men's meet, Maine started with a win in the 200 medley relay. Zach Weinman (Bethleham, Pa.) won the 1000 free with a time of 10:42.17. Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vt.) won the 50 free in 22.67 and added first place finishes in the 100 free in 50.05 and the 200 IM in 2:03.71. Eric Palmer (Bangor, Maine) won the 100 breast in 1:05.30 and also was first in the 200 back in 2:09.10. Martin Fitch (Bangor, Maine) was also a multiple event winner, taking first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.07 and the 200 breast in 2:22.32. Jason Stevens (West Boothbay Harbor, Maine) won the 200 free in 1:51.72 and Chris Card (West Bath, Maine) was first in the 100 fly in 56.66. The Black Bears tied for first in the 200 free relay. In the one meter diving, Maine took the top three spots, lead by Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) with 209.70 points. Burgie also was first in the three meter with 194.53 points.
