Maine Swimming Sinks Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed on Monday in a dual meet hosted by Fairfield University. The women's team picked up a 141-96 victory, while men's team won 146-96. Shelby Settlage won two individual events for the women and Nathan Richard took two first place finishes for the men.

For the women, Kiki O'Donnell (Hampden, Maine) was first in the 800 free in 9:34.92, with McKenzie Grobmyer (Charlottesville, Va.) taking second in 9:57.63. The Black Bears swept the top three spots in the 400 free as Sarah Holmsten (Red Wing, Minn.) was first in 4:42.86, followed by Brittany Harrington (Alexandria, Va.) in 4:45.38 and Heather Leach (Snellville, Ga.) in 4:53.63. In the 200 back, Adi Levy (Givatayim, Israel) was first in 2:28.47 and Crystie McGrail (Columbia, Md.) was second in 2:30.62. Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) was second in the 100 free with a time of 1:01.01 and Grobmeyer was second in the 200 butterfly in 2:31.28. Maine added a sweep of the 200 free as Harrington was first in 2:16.27, Heather Griffin (Presque Isle, Maine) was second in 2:16.92 and Holmsten was third in 2:17.39. Lauren Viles (Oakland, Maine) was second in the 50 free in 28.62. Shelbi Settlage (Bothell, Wash.) won the 200 breast in 2:47.57 and O'Donnell was second in 2:47.78. Settlage added a first place finish in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:28.88. On the three meter board, Jessica Pratt (Eddington, Maine) was second. The Black Bears also won the 200 medley relay.

 

 

In the men's meet, Eric Palmer (Bangor, Maine) won the 800 free in 9:21.59 and was also second in the 400 free in 4:28.09. Jason Stevens (West Boothbay Harbor, Maine) was second in the 200 free with a time of 2:06.21. The Black Bears took the top two spots in the 50 free as Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vermont) was first in 25.00 and John Quinn (Bangor, Maine) was second in 25.99. Richard added a second place finish in the 200 IM in 2:19.12, while Zach Weinman (Bethleham, Pa.) was second in the 200 back. In the 200 butterfly, Martin Fitch (Bangor, Maine) was first in 2:24.51. Maine swept the top three spots in the 100 free, with Stevens taking first in 56.52 followed by Quinn in 57.56 and Arthur Moy (Omaha, Nebraska) in 59.03. Another Maine sweep was in the 200 breast as Richard touched first in 2:31.64, Chris Card (West Bath, Maine) second in 2:35.47 and Fitch third in 2:36.98. Keith Burgie (Arundel,Maine) was first in both the one meter (246.23 points) and the three meter (232.20 points) diving events. The Black Bears also took first place in the 400 medley and 400 free relays.
